The Handmaid's Tale

by Margaret Atwood, Folio Society 2012
Dystopian novel set in the near future, in a totalitarian theocracy which has overthrown the United States government. The novel tells the story of Offred and her role as a Handmaid. The Handmaids are forced to provide children by proxy for infertile women of a higher social status, the wives of Commanders. We created The Handmaid’s Tale artworks in 2011. This Multi award-winning Folio Society edition was the first illustrated version of the Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale published in 2012. It is a constant source of inspiration for many artists. After The Handmaid's tale TV series 2017 the novel became very popular but our red handmaids were born 6 years earlier.

In 2011 we were commissioned by The Folio Society to illustrate the official novel for Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.  We were so moved and artistically inspired by the story, we went on to create this series of four posters, The Wall, The Mask, The Blood and The Face. Stylistically influenced by Italian Futurism and Russian Constructivism, the series is centred on the woman's body; Each print was produced by White Duck Printing Studio in 7 colours inc. metallic silver, at 50x70cm, and in an edition of 100+AP’s.
